COPPA Policy

Our district utilizes several computer programs and web-based services to deliver high-quality programs to our students. For students to use these programs, certain personal information must be provided—generally the student’s name and email address. Under federal COPPA law (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act), these websites must obtain parental consent before collecting personal information from children under the age of 13. However, the law does permit schools to consent to the collection of personal information on behalf of parents.

TECHNOLOGY

Technology is a vital part of learning today. It is a powerful tool that students can carry with them into college or the workforce. We are proud to provide the latest technology in all our classrooms, which we introduce at age-appropriate intervals. Each teacher receives training specific to the resources we provide so they can maximize device usage in their classrooms.

Chromebooks

We distribute Chromebooks to every student within our schools to use throughout the school year. We encourage students to use their Chromebooks to complete classroom assignments, practice math and typing skills, and participate in class. All Chromebooks come with the appropriate apps installed. Students may not download additional apps or software or otherwise make changes to their devices. Students who need additional apps or extensions may request them from the IT department.

Students should bring their devices to school fully charged.

Security
All school-supplied devices are connected to the JASD network and monitored via Go Guardian. We expect students to act responsibly on school networks and comply with our Acceptable Use Policy (available in our student handbook). Devices are subject to search at any time.

Optional Insurance
For convenience, we have partnered with Securranty to offer families insurance coverage on their child(ren)’s Chromebooks. Insurance is not required, but parents are responsible for any necessary repairs and/or replacement costs associated with the machines. This insurance may help. Please note, the district does not benefit financially from our partnership with Securranty.
